A.N.J.A. (Belfast), Bill Horist (Seattle), and Harmonica Lewinski (Rochester, NY)

Been waiting a while to share this. A.N.J.A. is from Belfast and her new fuzzed out single "Monoxide" is boss. 13th Floor Elevators-inspired goodness:

How are you set for a 45 minute long prepared guitar driven dystopian soundscape? Improviser, composer and performer Bill Horist is from Seattle, and his new album, "Tastemaker Epics," is more than likely what you've been waiting for. Available on cassette from Cudighi Records for $7 plus $4 shipping in the US, if avant-garde instrumental weirdness is your bag, you gotta check this out:

Rochester NY spooky surf rockers Harmonica Lewinski have a new Youtube video out, the second installment in their "home video-style diy live sessions," filmed at their rehearsal warehouse in Rochester. Bad ass, inspiring, DIY film-making and music. This only has 162 views and 6 thumbs up. I feel like if this had been released 25 years ago, it would've been on Matador and a must-have video cassette. But, perhaps it will take the world 25 years to catch up to Harmonica Lewinski. My criticism is the lead singer's got a fun voice, and it's pretty buried here, but such is DIY. Take 15 minutes out of your day and make yourself a pleasure on the screen with this fun as hell video:

Rad Stuff from the Netherlands: Mone, Fleur, Les Robots; Lo-Fi Rock'n'Roll from Portland (Girlsville); and CNQ fave Boys Age (Japan)

I've been having fun posting, so here's another one.

Mone is a Dutch alt-pop artist. "Rat" is from an upcoming album "Crocodile Kisses," to be released on Famous Gold Watch Records. Cool stuff:

Les Robots are a Dutch instrumental rock duo who teamed up with Dutch singer Floor Elman aka "Fleur" to make a really amazing neo-ye-ye album. Back in June 2020, Spanish label Bickerton released this, and now Richmond, Virginia's 6131 Records has a stateside pressing available for pre-sale, featuring updated artwork and insert, with a newly added b-side, previously only available on a 7" single. It's great, check it out:

Les Robots' last release on Bandcamp was August 2020, Project World Control. Just absolutely rad instrumental rock'n'roll -- vinyl tapes, and CDs still available:

Portland's Girlsville has a great new release called Spoiled Legacy you should check out if you're into lo-fi alt-rock. They say it's a domestic U.S. release of a Germ House tape that came out on German label Detriti Records in 2020, and the Girlsville version adds 7 compilation rarities to the b-side. You can pre-order the cassette, but I just got the second to last one, so good luck:

I also just picked up a digital download of the new Boys Age. He's got CDs limited to 25, with only 9 remaining of this writing. Boys Age is always such a pleasure:

Rock'n'Roll

I've been playing the fudge outta Conan Exiles on Steam the past several days. That's a great game.

Soon enough I'm going to put some of my cruddy paintings up on Etsy. Here's the most recent one I did, "Terrorist."

Tonight we listened to all but one side of Todd Rundgren's Something/Anything? and it's as awesome as ever. The side we didn't listen to was the first side of the second disc. It's got a lot of excellent songs on it:

I got my Chronic Anxiety cassette in the mail the other day. 11 lo-fi lady-fronted noise punk tracks. A must have:

I think it's great Bandcamp is helping people register to vote. Voting is super-important. The system is rigged, but a large portion of that rig is only to make you not vote. If you can get past that rigged part and get your vote in, you may be able to help shit not be so fucked up. If you're able to vote but don't, you're only enabling the fucked-up shit that is going on.

I'm 42 years old, and while I'm a dummy in more than few regards, I'm not a complete moron. So that's fucking wisdom. Get registered. Fucking vote in the mid-terms. If you're young, there's a lot of you, and you can make a difference if you're interested in freedom, equality, and the opposite of future dystopia.

I'm keeping my hopes grounded for a blue wave. At best we may end up with a stalemate between progressives and regressives. At worst, elections are suspended and The Purge is approved by the Supreme Court.

Good four song garage EP from Spain:

From Orlando, weirdo electro-punk, absolutely:

Mixcloud Faves

I'm hoping to get CNQ32, the latest podcast episode version thing of my little blog here, out this weekend. I sed the same thing around this time last month, but hey, Fallout 4 happens.

In the meantime you should get on Mixcloud and listen to and follow these great shows:

The KUAF Vinyl Hour: Based out of Fayetteville, Arkansas, the KUAF Vinyl Hour is a weekly music program, featuring your hosts Pete and Leigh, playing and discussing musical selections from various local co-hosts' record collections. From metal to classical, reggae to country - it's all kinds of music, but it's all on vinyl.

Quite Trill Radio: The trillest hip-hop show, put out by Texas rapper Mirage, formerly based out of Austin but now out of Dallas. Consistently one of the best podcasts I listen to.

Futures and Pasts Radio: Post-punk radio show with Erika Elizabeth, live every Thursday night from 8-10pm PST at 90.3FM in N/NE Portland, or worldwide at freeformportland.org.

Dynamite Hemorrhage: I've gushed about Dynamite Hemorrhage enough loyal CNQ'ers are sick of hearing about it, but just in case -- based out of San Francisco, Dynamite Hemorrhage Radio is a semi-regular faux radio show/podcast devoted to sub-underground and raw music from the last ten decades. Learn more at http://dynamitehemorrhage.com.

Funky 16 Corners Radio Show: Out of New Jersey, the main man Larry Grogan's weekly look into the sounds and stories of vintage funk, soul, jazz and rare groove, all on original vinyl.

Grogan also puts out the Iron Leg Radio Show, featuring lots of groovy 60s obscura. You can find it on Itunes but it's not on Mixcloud, I guess.

Tabs Out Cassette Podcast, based out of Wilmington, Delaware, a cassette podcast focusing on noise and experimental sounds. If you're not down for the weirdo sounds they play, then you should at least stick around for their banter, these guys are super-funny.

New Punk Rock Cassettes From Bandcamp

I'm working on the May 2017 podcast and probably would already be done with it if it weren't for my detrimental Fallout 4 addiction. What a game. It has taken the place of Skyrim as my Best Game Ever. Anyway, check this out:

Tingo Tongo Tapes

Tingo Tongo Tapes is a label based out of L.A., focusing on cassette releases of experimental noise, electronic and non-electronic projects. If outsidery noise art is your bag, you'll want to check 'em out if you're not already hep. Here's a sampling of the Tingo Tongo catalog.

The latest on Tingo Tongo's Soundclound page is "Synaptic Seepage" by Squim. Here's track 10, Non-Dairy Creamer:

From last month, here is "Empire of Rusted Steel," off Psychiceyeclix by Solar Schematics:

Super-freaky from MMzblast:

I featured BE; on the March podcast. Here's another track off their weird "At The Start."

So, yeah, get your freak on with Tingo Tongo Tapes -- they've got new releases in the works as well.

Meanwhile, April's CNQ podcast will come out whenever I feel like putting it out. I've been rocking a complete recordings of J.S. Bach the past few weeks and have an acute case of T-Rexstasy as well. "The Slider" is so killer diller.

OSR Tapes

I only recently learned about OSR Tapes, a New York based non-profit label that's been putting out cool lo-fi, avant garde type of rock'n'roll since 2007, and no sooner had I learned about them than I learned they were closing. You can currently get the OSR digital catalog on bandcamp for $25 -- or order cassettes and albums from their webpage osr-tapes.com. They're shipping through June 17 and then that's it, so check em out while they're still around. Here's a sampling of the catalog, go over to the OSR bandcamp page and delve deeper.

New From Bandcamp - Punk: Hardcore, Powerviolence, Garage, Weirdo

Per their Bandcamp page, The Puking Toms formed in Franklin, Massachusetts in 1997, released 2 demo cassettes, and played a lot of shows in different places. This is their first recording, from 1997:

This is new from Abnormal Broadcasting, out of California. The band is called P.E.A.R.L. and their new 4 song demo is the type of raw hc I'm really into. Their Bandcamp page says "This is for the queers who have had enough of that trans misogynist bullshit. No one deserves to be left out. Fight back till you die." Which I think is cool but tbh I dunno what "trans misogynist bullshit" is. I'm gonna assume it's something non-inclusive and that I would be against it.

Here's the first song off the EP, they've got cassettes available on the page:

Six song album "Joy of Life" from Polish powerviolence band Low Standards. Heavy as the af, I'm into it:

And here's Iron Filth, Indonesian powerviolence! This song is called "Lumut Kemunafikan Dunia," and it's off Iron Filth's six song effort "Lethargic Dialogue" originally released back in 2014 but due out on cassette soon.

The Nods are garage rock from Salt Lake City. This is the b-side from their new cool 2 song 7":

This is from a crazy little six song demo from Olympia, Washington's Scrivener. A lo-fi Devo devotional, reminds me of the Ausmuteants, but the best parts of it remind me of early Gene Ween. Completely enjoyable demo:
