Bandcamp Friday

Haven't posted anything in a while, here's a rundown of some cool stuff that's been sent to me this month. Indie pop from France:

Jim's Twenty-One was active in the 80s and now they're back with a release on Harriet Records. The lead single is good, I need to check out the rest of the album:

From Lexington label Transcendental Revolution, here's a great little 5 song ep of what we used to call lo-fi power pop, but now since lo-fi means something else, I got "basement-based power pop" is what you might call. Anyway, BODAGGIT'S "Tease Horse" is noisey, it's poppy, it's low fidelity rock'n'roll, I enjoy it quite a bit:

Crazy hc from St. Louis, out on Feral Kid Records:

Also from Feral Kid Records, here's some "Italian dancey garage punk":

And speaking of Italy, I love Italy's Tana Delle Pigri and have been playing them a lot on my KPISS.FM and 8K.NZ shows (plug):

Finally, Antigen Records (Ipswich, UK) has released a remastered vinyl edition of Pound Land's "Mugged," originally released on Cruel Nature last year. Pound Land is crazy, Louder Than War said "Taken in one sitting, Mugged is an intense, exhausting and oppressive experience." High praise indeed, and right up my ally:

Isla Invisible; Adiós Cometa; The Ducks; The Bordellos; Brian Bordello; Gilla Band; A.N.J.A.; Kid Gulliver; Suckling; Neon Kittens; Smashing Red; The Postmen; and Salem Trials

Been gone for a couple of weeks, and while on vacation I realized I had starred in my inbox a butt ton of new releases I've been neglecting to share on here. I'll be playing some of these on my hour long KPISS.FM show this Saturday at 5PM Eastern, but you saw and heard it here on the blog first!

From Velvet Blue Music, a 4 song nu-gaze split from Isla Invisible (Puerto Rico/NYC) and Adiós Cometa (Costa Rica). This came out back in July of last year, I missed it. CDs and tapes still available:

Also missed, the Duck's (England) full length, Enter the Cloaca got released in December. The Ducks are nuts, and the lead off track, "Give God a Bone," proves it. Check it out:

In January, the Bordellos released as a free download The Sunday Experience, originally released as a one sided 10inch vinyl EP on Benevolent Antenna Records. Good luck finding that. Y'all know I love the Bordellos:

And in late February, Think Like a Key released Brian Bordello's Songs for Cilla To Sing, a solo acoustic full length that is already on my best of the year list:

A buddy at work turned me on to Gilla Band from Ireland. Their newest single, "Sports Day," is rad:

Belfast's A.N.J.A. has a new single called "Witchmother," it's rockin':

Here's a good new power pop single from Boston, "Kiss and Tell" by Kid Gulliver. Came out in January:

Austin's Suckling has finally released their debut album mid-February, I caught them opening for Jesus Lizard in 2018. I remember there only being two guys on stage and maybe a drummer, but it looks like they're a four piece now. Great noise rock, though they used a sample I have also used in a Legless Crabs song and I'm totally upset (j/k):

Metal Postcard Records has more new releases than you can shake a stick at, with a packed release schedule coming up this month as well, so catch up on these, from Neon Kittens, Smashing Red, The Postmen, and Salem Trials:

Alright, I still have 64 starred releases to check out, the oldest dating from mid-February, but ruminate on these, and I'll try and post again tomorrow. Friday I'm going to work on my KPISS.FM show -- will be featuring stuff from France and Marrakesh! Will be a lot of fun, tune in. And thanks for reading -- go support these artists if you hear something you like.

Bigflower (Liverpool); Die Geister Beschwören (California); No Monster Club (Ireland); PoT/MaN (Phoenix); Wóma (UK)

Here's some psych, post-punk, power pop and experimental tunes tonight.

CNQ fave Bigflower has a new track out. Quality as always from the psych-leaning post-rock band out of Liverpool:

Die Geister Beschwören is a "Portland/Humboldt psych-folk ensemble," and their new digital six song release, Ghosts, This Is Survival is worth a listen for "mossfolk" aficionados. Good stuff:

No Monster Club is a three piece out of Ireland, and their first album in five years, deadbeat effervescent is due out Feb. 11 from Popical Island/Emotional Response Records. The single, "Save the Circus," is a killer power pop track:

PoT/MaN is post-punk out of Phoenix, also a three piece. This s/t EP is their debut. Achieves post-punk heaviosity, I'm a fan:

England's Hiru Records has a new release, an improvised drone-based album by the artist Wóma called Drán & Ongalnes. Created solely using an experimental, resonating steel instrument called a bow chime, dig it:

Kale Ogle and the Light (Arkansas); Armstrong (Wales)

Clean Nice Quiet is going on it's tenth year. Ain't that somethin'. I can't imagine too many readers see the webpage version of the blog anymore, but if you do, you may notice I did some tidying up on the sidebars. Specifically the submissions guidelines, the Noisy Neighbors blogroll, and the Other Cool Sites sidebar. I split the Other Cool Sites up into 3 smaller lists: radio shows, labels and distros, and then misc. cool stuff.

I used to be stupidly proud of the enormous blog roll I had created on the Noisy Neighbors blogroll. I daydreamed it was the biggest collection of amateur music blogs on the web, and hell, maybe at some point it was. And I wanted to use it for my own ends, to keep up with other blogs, comment on them, and maybe build a sense of community with these other folks doing both similar and different versions of what I'm doing here. Doing that was actually how I started CNQ; I enjoyed a number of music blogs at the time and wanted in on the fun. Over the last decade blogs have come and gone, of course. And I've trimmed Noisy Neighbors down previously, removing links to blogs that stopped posting or simply ceased to be. This time I went a step further and took out blogs that either I wasn't very intersted in, or were just sharing download links without context, a few that rudely didn't have CNQ in their own blogrolls (out of spite), etc. So it's still an unwieldy thing but it's trimmed down enough now that I've told myself once again I should use it for my own purposes -- to read other people's blogs, listen and engage more. We'll see.

I did leave a few up in memorium (Crud Crud, The Sunday Experience); and a couple in hopes they come back one day (Movie Ink, Killed By Death Records).

For the Other Cool Sites sidebar, mostly those were sites that didn't have an RSS feed for the blogroll when I first linked to them. A lot of them do have RSS feeds now and are active, so I moved them over to Noisy Neighbors. The radio shows in the new Radio, Radio sidebar are all aces, so you should check them out, and same goes for the labels under Record Labels and Distros.

So yeh, ten years. First post was Sunday June 3, 2012. Nothing special planned for the anniversary, just hope to keep chugging along and doing what I do here. Occassionally I do think about getting back into sharing obscure vinyl on here, but it's not something I'd say you should expect any time soon.

And of course I left up the ever present Doctor Nod Top Tips cassette listen and purchase link. I still have a few of those cassettes left, so go ahead and order one. That album rules and you're missing out if you haven't heard it yet.

Here's a couple of things I found while doing all this housecleaning today. Somehow I completely missed Kale Ogle (of the aforementioned Doctor Nod fame, and whose website can be found over in the also aforementioned Other Cool Sites sidebar) released this 9 song digital album in November 2019, with a backing band. Kale Ogle & The Light:

Armstrong is the solo project of Welsh musician Julian Pitt. His latest 20 track album, Under Blue Skies also came out in 2019, and is available on CD from The Beautiful Music in US and Canada and Country Mile Records in the UK. Pretty, pretty, pretty indie power pop:

Soma Crew (York), The Poppermost (Glasgow), Uhylak (Wroclaw, Poland), Bethan (Dallas), The False Positives (Rochester, NY), and Pink Milk (Gotland)

Soma Crew is based out of York and has a new "twin" vinyl release, Out of Darkness/Into Light courtesy Vinyl Eddie Records. The 12 songs are all around 5 minutes, give or take. I haven't listened to the whole thing, but the four or five tracks I listened to are rad. Psych in a Brian Jonestown Massacre vein.

Here's a video for their single, "Mighty Forces:"

Uchylak is from Wroclaw, Poland. Going back to 2019, he has eight albums and eight EPs on Bandcamp, and I love an artist who is so prolific that his friends tell him "I can't keep up with your output." I can relate.

Super-cool instrumental electronic music, the artist says it's "a mix of techno-industrial, ambient, drone and lo fi." This song has a Ministry vibe I love:

The Poppermost is a one-man band from Glasgow with a new album due out on the 30th called Hits To Spare, which will be made available on vinyl and CD in the US courtesy Think Like A Key Music. A Beatles/Bands Influenced By The Beatles-influenced project, "Up Against It" is the B-Side of the first single:

Velvet Blue Music is a label out of Huntington Beach, California, I'm interested in digging into their catalog a little more. There's a number of bands on their Bandcamp page from the DFW and Texas. I love this track from Dallas artist Bethan, whom I've never heard of. An eerie jazz vocal:

I look forward to listening to more of the Velvet Blue Music catalog soon.

Here in the Year of our Lorb 2021, there are so many people making so much music. What a time to be alive. And you'll never listen to it all. It's a wild scene, man.

The False Positives are out of Rochester, NY, and I have been there twice. They've got a really cool record store called The Record Archive that has a bar in it.

This is The False Positive's eighth digital single release since December 2018. Fun lo-fi power pop:

Swedish duo Pink Milk have got to be going places. Gothy shoegaze, reverb to the max -- and what a fun video:

That's half a month's worth of quality submissions right there. I'll try for the other half of July submissions here soon.

Rock/Roll.

HC with a little post-punk in it from Minneapolis:

A lot of post-punk and a little hc in this Wire-esque track, also from Minneapolis. I featured a track off this album, "Human Exploration," back in December, and Boston Hassle did a good review of the record back in July 2015. Here's another track from the album:

Here's some HC from Austin, courtesy London's Static Shock:

Arkansan first rate freak out artist and CNQ main man Dr. Nod just uploaded 6 tracks of unearthed material from 2014. Garage-psych sleeze-pop yeh!

Todayshits from Lexington has a new album out, chock-full of short little lo-fi psych-pop ditties:

More psych-pop, this from France and La Rochelle's Frantic City Records:

Sweden's Impo and the Tents have a new 7" out on Berlin's Alien Snatch! Records. This was actually put back in September I guess, but it's new to me. Sugary fourth wave power pop:

From power pop to grindcore. These angry fellows are from France, and this is new, off a split with the Indonesian band Proletar (the second song is by Proletar), on Massachusett's Give Praise Records:

Cool piece of punk rock history here from LA's Frontier Records bandcamp page:

"In the late '70s, Dangerhouse Records--that most legendary of punk rock labels--released a handful of indispensable 7-inches and two 12-inches: records that everyone knows, worships and collects. One of the 12-inches was Black Randy's Pass the Dust, I Think I'm Bowie, and the other, released in 1979, was the one-sided, six-song, silkscreened picture EP, Yes L.A.

"The title was a take-off on the seminal No Wave compilation album released a year earlier, No New York, and the Dangerhouse kids even went so far as to include the disclaimer "Not produced by Brian Eno" on the record. The original was limited to 2,000 copies, every one screened by hand and packaged in a clear bag with a white cardboard backing.

"2013: Frontier has taken great pains to reproduce every detail of the original EP, from the ink to the bag and cardboard, right down to custom-cut mylar seals for the flap. Still, there are a couple of differences: for example, there were only 1,000 of these made rather than the original's run of 2,000. As for the rest, we'll let you discover them for yourself.

Available in your choice of red on green, blue on green or black on green."

Here's the whole thing, this is great!

Alright, in near-future posts I've got more January releases coming, plus new Adam Holtz. And just in case you didn't know, that Black Randy and the Metrosquad album is available in full on Youtube. I just listened to the whole thing for the first time a few days after Bowie died.

Weirdo Lo-Fi from Sweden and Japan, Garage-Psych from France, No-Wave from Brisbane, Argentinian Hardcore Punk, Jangle-Pop from D.C., and All Kinds of Punk from All Over Creation.

While waiting for Total War: SHOGUN 2 to dl on Steam (currently on sale for $12.49 and supposedly the pinnacle of the Total War games), I thought I'd finish up on December releases from bands and label I follow. These monthly updates might be getting a little repetitive, with a rotation of the same bands and labels every update. I'm working on that. Meanwhile, here's more of what you've come to expect from a standard CNQ update.

This awesome oddball lo-fi pop is the new solo project of Martin Månsson Sjöstrand, frontman of Sweden’s Dog, Paper, Submarine. Comes courtesy of perennial CNQ favorite Manx label Small Bear Records:

More weirdo lo-fi, this from Japan. I've featured Boys Age a lot in 2015. Cool, weird stuff:

No-wave from Brisbane's Moontown Records. I'm not sure where the band Bent is from though:

Glasgow freak-out:

Garage-psych from France:

More garage-psych by Boys, off a PNKSLM 2015 End of the Year Sampler:

Great jangle with a new video from Washington DC's Dot Dash:

Feminist punk from Olympia:

And more, this from a Bridge Nine 2015 compilation. War on Women are from Baltimore and I'll mention again, are a great live show:

New power pop from from Sweden. This sounds like it's from 1983 but I think it is new:

From Fort Wayne, Indiana:

Found this Argentinian crusty hardcore courtesy France's Crapoulet Records. This was released back in October:

Finally, this is from Puerto Rico's Krampus Records, who brought us one of my fave new bands of 2015, Madd Blake and the Stalins.
